If you enjoy smoking cigars or you have started about trying it, one thing that you might wonder about is whether a humidor is necessary. Some people will say yes. But how necessary is it?
The truth is it’s not always necessary to have one. If you are someone who is collecting many cigars in a short amount of time or you’re ‘home aging’ your cigars, a humidor’s not necessary. For a short run, it’s possible to just by a food container that’s sealable and made of plastic along with a humidifying device.
You can just put the cigars and the device. Check on them regularly and they’ll almost last indefinitely. However, if you’re going to do this open one of the corners of the containers a crack so that there’s air flow. This will also prevent mold.
The only problem with this is your cigars may not have that luscious fragrance of cedar wood that comes from using a quality humidor. You can put in a cedar spacer and put it into your container, or line your container’s bottom with a spacer row.
If you are looking for a way to display your cigars in style, there’s nothing wrong with buying a nice humidor. But if money’s tight, you might want to try the alternative above.
